LOCAL COMMITTEES ELECTED. ’ DONATION OF £l6O TO START WITH. An increased attendance favoured the meeting called for Friday night, when the Mayor presided. The following order of business was transacted ; Executive Committee.—The Mayor, Rev. C. A. Gray, and Messrs A. E. Willett, M. Eraser, C. R. S. Barrett, T. J. Price and E. C. Mills, Collectors.—Mr Barrett said that Mr R. A." Anderson, Chairman, of the Southland Branch had offered to come' out, and, with tw'o local gentlemen canvass the business places. Dr. Trotter and Mr Willett were appointed to assist him. The following ladies were appointed to make a house-to--liou.no canvass:—South Riverton, western end, Mesdames Willett and T. Bailey; near bridge, Misses Densham; eastern end, Mesdaraies Petchell and Gilder, North Riverton, west, Mesdames De Clifford and Price; east, Men dame s' Roy andl Philp. Red Cross Shop.—Mrs Gray and Committee to conduct a. sale.

Badge Sellers.—Misses Woolf, Trottor, and two of Hospital nurses. Stock Drive.—Mr E. 0. Mills said he was pleased to be present to assist in the Copper Trail, and would give the fundi a, start by donating £lO0 — (Applause). The stock drive was a good idea, and if left to him he would guarantee to make it* a success'. During the past few months three sales were held in the district—at Otautau,' Tuatapeie, and Oropuki, respectively, all of which were the means of raising large sums of money. Mir R. A. Anderson had mentioned) to him that he would come out and go round the farmers in the area, included in Riverton’s district. He would place his car at the disposal of Mr Anderson, and also accompany him in the country. He would take the whole matter in hand, and conduct the sale, all that was required being the employment of a couple of men to bring the stock to the Riverton isaleyairds. He saw no reason why £2OO should not be raised from this quarter—(Applause). The sale could be arranged for the first Wednesday in October. Sports Day.—Mr Mills thought a good spouts programme could' be arranged mi the lines of the Queen Carnival, and £SO or £6O raised in this way. The matter was referred "to the Amusement Committee, consisting of Messrs Provan, Borland, Mills, Geary and Bell, and Mesdames Manley, Trotter, De Clifford and Mss Johnstone. , -Mr Mills also suggested that they go in for the mysterious parcels. They were if big side line, and if the Commercial Travellers came out they could undertake the sale of• the parcels in connection with the Sports.—lt was decided to leave the matter to the l Amusements Committee). Bottle Drive.—Mr Barrett said it had been suggested that they promote a children’s bottle' drive, and he had spoken to Mr E. C. Hewat, headmaster of the school, who was quite willing to take charge of the bottles and superintend the collection.—Proposal agreed to, and Mr Hewat to be thanked | for his offer. i Mrs Manley is promoting a children’s I concert in aid of the funds, ■ The secretary read a communication from the secretary of the LongwoodOraki Red Cross with which she enclosed a cheque for £135, being the amount voted from their late effort to the Copper Trail—(Applause). Mr Philp; mentioned that an Invercargill concert party would give a concert free of expenses—(Applause). RED CROSS SHOP. On Saturday next the ladies of the Red Cross will open ai shop for the sale: of farm) and garden produce, gift articles, sweets, flowers etc. The notice is short, but we hope everyone will do their best to make the day a success. No ■sacrifice .should be too great for the sake of the boys at the front. OREPUKI. At Orepnki on Wednesday Messrs R. A. Anderson and G'. P. Young (chairman), Mr C. 0. Nicholas, (secretary, Mrs King, Mrs Nicholas, Mrs Aitken, Mrs H. P. Young; Messrs Bmvnridge, Lyon, Aitken, Menpos, Hennessey, and Mclntyre, with power to add to their number. All present were voted a committee, and the meeting adjourned with the usual votes of thanks.

OTAITTAU. The Copper Trail effort is assuming a business aspect in OtautaiV. The preliminaries are now well in hand, and the month of September should register something substantial. Two dances have already been held, and -y another takes place to-morrow night v in the Town Hall, the nett proceeds of which are t‘o| help swell the funds'. On the 18th. September the “Merrymakers,” an Invercargill organisation, are to give ai performance, and a large house is certain. A “bountiful hank” committee was set up at Thursday’s committee meeting, and the Sports committee are framing a programme for their day. A number of art union books are out, and tickets meet with ready sale.
