KILLED IN ACTION.
It is with regret that we learn ’of' the death of Jack Stirling, grandson of Mr John Stirling and nephew of Mr William Stirling, of this town. The deceased was .a very prominent Christchurch swimmer (amateur), and whilst on a visit to Riverton in 1909, when quite a lad, he easily won the 100 yards swimming race at the Riverton Regatta against all coiners. This was the first, of numerous races that he has won during his. too brief career as a swimmer. We reprint the following from a Christchurch paper: “Private Jack Stirling was the onlv son of Mr Richard Stirling, who was at one tiiuo a member of the composing staff of the ‘ Western Star,’ and now of (ill Colombo Christchurch. Private Stirling was a native of Colac, Victoria, and he came to Christchurch witty his father 17 years ago. He was educated at isu. Michael’s, the Normal, and the East Christchurch Schools. He was a tine swimmer, and was a prominent member of the East Christchurch Swimming Club. He represented his chib for the Harris Cup for three consecutive seasons. He also won the two principal handicap events during the Duke Kalumamoku carnival qt th w , lepid Baths, aqd represented Canterbury at the Now Zealand championships. He was a good footballer, being a member of the T.inwood Football Club senior leapt durm* 1913.”
