DAIRY FARM INSPECTION.

The Secretary of Agriculture, acting on the reports of the various inspectors throughout the Dominion, has drawn the attention of the Minister for Agriculture to the necessity for the exercise of more cleanliness of the milk supply to many dairy factories throughout the Dominion. He mentions no particular district, and says the matter is causing grave concern. To remedy things he is of the opinion that it would certainly be to the benefit of all interested in the business if an adequate system of instruction and inspection of premises of dairy factory suppliers were in force. Finance is in this, as in moist things, the chief difficulty, and he believes that the time has come for the factories'to face the position and intimate to the Government their willingness to provide the money for the work. He is of the opinion that the most convenient way in which this could be done would be by means of a charge for grading dairy produce for export. Quite a small rate of 3d per package would yield a sum •sufficient to warrant the Government in establishing a. comprehensive system of instruction and inspection of milk suppliers’ premises. The importance of clean milk is recognised by everyone who knows anything at all about the subject. It is essential in order to maintain the highest quality of cheese. What do the local factories - think about the Secretary’s suggestion ?
