.The Otautau Wesleyan Sunday school held their annual picnic in Mr 'J. Parmenter's paddock on Wednesday.; Previously, the picnic has always been held at Riverton in conjunction with the local school but owing to the increase in _ the number of scholars it. was dgcided this year to hold it at Otautau. The weather was unfavorable in the morning, therefore the dinner was partaken of in the Town Hall. The afternoon, however, cleared up beautifully, and a most enjoyable time was spent. Games and races of all kinds were provided for the scholars, also amusements for the teachers and others. Tea was dispensed about 5 p.m., and all returned home after having spent a most pleasant afternoon. The Aparima is evidently in good fishing trim at present. At Ringway the other day two Otautau an glers landed 30 trout, averaging from lib to 4lbs. Fishermen in the vicinity of Wairio and Nightcaps also repprt good baskets. The arrivals in the colony last year (32,685) exceeded the cumber recorded in 1904 (32,132), and the departures during 1905, which num bered 23,383, were also jjrop.ter than those in the previous yeax—viz, 22,277. The exocss oi arrivals over departures Ist year was Qoo?, against 10,355 in 1904. The colony has drawn to itself in each of the ten years 1896 to JOOS more population than it has parted with. The amazing number cf suicides in America, especially among rich men and women, has so slicked America that an Anti.suicide C<m mission has been appointed. Dr Cooley, of Cleveland, Ohio, one of the physicians of the Commission, has already saved several m*tt and women from suicide, and made them pledge their word ict to kill themselves until Vai Commission shall have had an opportunity to see how their lives can be rendered more tolerable and more cheerful.
