OTAUTAU NOTES.

(prom oub own correspondent.) There have been seven sons bom in this city within a fortnight—an item of good news. A football match was played in Walker’s paddock on Wednesday between the Nightcaps and Otautau clubs, and resulted in a win for Nightcaps with two trophies in the shape of a broken shin and a strained thigh.

A great event took place in the evening, viz., the trades’ first invitation ball. This is very, likely to become an annual affair. Unfortunately, it was very wet weather. 'Notwithstanding this common weakness of Otautau on gala days, the ball was a great success, and reflected great success on the working committee* The hall decorations wore magnificent, and excited much admiration. Mr Dickson supplied a light repast, which was spread in a large marquee, and his “prohibition trifles" excited much die*, mission. It is reported that one of the local hotelkeepers is so scared for the future that he has sold but his business* The music was .in the .capable hands of Miss Gardiner (piano), and Messrs W # Young (comet) and Egan Bros, (violins), Mr C. Church proved himself a capable M.C. About sixty couples took partin the Grand March. During the evening Mr Donald Mclntosh danced the sailor s hornpipe-in good style.
