MINNIE DEAN.

Since sentence o£ death was passed upon Minnie Dean upon a charge of murder at the recent sitting of the Supreme Court in Invercargill, all sorts of rumors have been afloat as to how the woman has been comporting and conducting herself. It has been stated lhat she is resigned to her

fate, but she feels her terrible position acutely, and also that the composure she maintained throughout the trial has been succeeded by a pitiful collapse. These rumours are absolutely unfounded. As a matter of fact Minnie Dean preserves a perfect equanimity, eats heartily, sleeps well, and chats cheerfully with the woman who is constantly with her, night and day. So far she has admitted nothing with regard to the crime for which she has been sen-

tenced to death, and the only regret she expressed is that she has brought disgrace on her relatives and on the little ones who were found residing at “ The Larches.” Possibly there may be an alteration in the demeanour of the condemned woman when the supreme moment approaches, but up to the present time she has shown but little sign of anxiety or perturbation. A telegram from Dunedin states that Mr Hanlon is making application to the Attorney-General for leave to move the Appeal Court to grant permission to argue the objections raised in the Dean trial as to the admissibility of the evidence regarding the finding of the bodies of the other children.—Southland Times.
