No Tenders Called.
TO THE EDITOK. Sir, —A contract wag let to Mr J. Fleck from the County Council, without a tender being called for 100 yard* gravel to be pub on Otaitai road and 300 yards from junction of roads, Thornbury and Otautau to dairy factory. Mr Fleck gets 4s per yard for this when several others werp quite prepared to do it, had the usual thing been done, viz., calling openly for tenders, for half the price. Why and how does this occur? Public money should not be frittered away in this manner, nnd I shall ask the member for the riding to have a proper investigation as to how this has been done. —I am, &c., Faiupl.vt. [Wc might say, for the information of our correspondent, that if he turns to our last report of the meeting of the Wallace County Council, held on 13th December last, he will find that the contract was given to Mr Fleck, as it was pointed put that ho holds the key to the place where the bast river gravel is obtainable. Councillors also expressed the opinion that the price was reasonable. Hence ca'ling tenders was deemed unncccssarv. — Ed. W.S.I
