HOME AND FOREIGN. [ PRESS ASSOCIATION, THDBGEAMi.j London, Mr Dibbs has asked Sir S. Samuel to cable to the Executive of the Chicago Exhibition that unless a building is provided for the New South Wales exhibits in a block the colony will have nothing to do with the exhibition, as a grand display will be impossible if the minerals and wools are to be separated. The cable question is now engaging Mr Dibbs’ attention. The New South Wales Treasurer (Mr See) is opposed to the renewal of New South Wales’ liability on present terms, but Mr*Dibbs is in favour of increasing the subsidy- in order to secure cheaper rates, especially for press and Government messages.
Sir W. J. Clarke, of Victoria, guarantees £IOO towards a rowing match in which an Australian university eight .shall take part. The man Neill, now in custody on a charge of poisoning a number of girls, has been proved to be the writer of the letter to Mr Fred Smith, M.P., demanding £2500, or threatening to inform the police that he tried to poison one of the Lambeth victims. The Democratic platform denounces the M‘Kinley tariff as favouring the capitalists, and demands the imposition of the lowest scale of duties consistent with meeting the expenses of the country. It condemns the action of President Harrison towards Chili and over.the Behring Sea dispute. The Small Holdings Bill has passed its final stages in the House of Lords. [This is the Bill we referred to in our last issue.] Funeral services in memory of Lord Ancrum were held on Sunday at Newbattle Abbey and Jurburg, in which the preachers referred in terms of praise to the character of the young nobleman. Sydney, In consequence of the outbreak of smallpox on board of the steamer Oroye the Board of Health has decided not to issue clean bills of health to vessels leaving Sydney for other ports. The cases of illness reported have developed into smallpox, though in a modified form.
