WASTE LAND BOARD.

At the usual fortnightly meeting of above, the following business of local interest was transacted, which we cull from the News : N". E. Griffiths, Orepuki, wrote asking that section 84, block 2, Longwood, upon which he had made improvements, should be burdened with a valuation of £l6O when put up to auction.—" Valuation to be supplied by Ranger or Surveyor. The Ranger valued the improvements made by G. Pearce, on section 8, block 9, Longwood District, reserved by Government, at £2l 10s.—It was decided to pay Mr Pearce compensation to the extent of £2O. John Corkhill was granted a perpetual lease of section 98, Waiau. The Chairman stated that he had, iu company with Messrs Denniston and Kinross, visited run 176, Manapouri, last week, with a view of ascertaining whether it was suitable for cutting up into small grazing runs. —ilr Kinross said he had been exceedingly anxious, if the Board could see its way, to have the run cut up, but on visiting the ground he found a oreat part of it of a very inferior character, the low land being swampy and the hill hides steep, covered with fern and with no grass at all. There were.large stones all over the surface and it was not capable of improvement. Ho did not think, therefore, thatitwas suitable for subdivision. There was, however, a piece of good flat land at one end, which, with a piece of land from the run, would make a grazing run of 1500 acres. —Mr Denniston agreed with Mr Kinross that the run was not suitable For subdivision, and said that if a piece were eat off as suggested bv Mr Kinross, it. would, in a measure, meet the demand for small grazing runs —The Chairman said that some people had been confusing run 170 with run 176 k. The latter would fall in in March, 1893, and would have to he dealt with soon. There were some other runs in that district he was instructed by the Government to visit, and he would then go over this one.— It was decided, on the motion of Mr Kinross, in re-letting run 170 to cut off a portion of the high land and inchide it in block of the flat, making an area of about 1500 acr »s to let under the small grazing run system.— Mr Kinross remarked that on the way to run 176 they passed through some very good land, but, unfortunately, it was not under the jurisdiction of the Board.—Mr D mniston took exception to this observation, remarking that the Otago School Commissioners did a great deal to encou r ago settlement.— Mr Kinross said he could prove otherwise, but, at this point, the chairman said they were raising debateable matter, and proceeded on to the next business.
