Accordingly to the favor shown in the replies the editor gave Ilia dioision, and ho has awarded the first prize to the correspondent who drew up the following list: —Slatrsman, AY. E. Gladstone ; general, Count Yon Moltko ; novelist, Robert L. Stevenson ; poet, word Tennyson ; painter, Meissonier ; actor, Irving; vocalist, Adelina Patti; lawyer. Sir Charles Russell ; historian. B. A. Freeman ; scientist, Tyndall ; doctor. Pasteur; composer, Aerdi; enginec, Ferdinand Do Hess ops ; inventor, Edison. The greatest living an of all A\ r illiam E Gladstone ; 11 because he is the champion of Ihe can e of humanity; his life work the elevation of ideas among men, among nations; his physical na'n.c being pu ifi d through inspiration to that ocgice which perfects his conceptions ol man s duly to others, which gives him comv.. e to reveal tliem, and intellectual and moral force to illustrate them. Pasteur is a biologist, physicist, and ciuim-d, but not a physician. The gentleman who carried * oil' the second pr ze brought in a few other men as ranking highest, and among others, Bismarck, Jules Verne, Edwin Booth, Herbert Spenser, and Dr Ivocb. Both t e second and third prizetakers pronounced in favor of Mr Gladstone as the greatest living man. perhaps the most wonderful mm of the day, is not even mentioned.
