The proceedings at the meeting of shareholders of the National Bank of New Zealand to-day were of an animated character. The chairman, acting on the suggestion of some large shareholders, recommended that a strong committee should he appointed to investigate the position of the hank. 'I his suggestion was adopted by the meeting, together with all the board’s proposals as to •writing off capital, calling np 30s per share, and passing the dividend. In bis speech the chairman admitted that errors of judgment bad been made in the conduct of business, and attributed the losses to tbo depression, bad harvest, and the labour troubles. Tbe bank was not in immediate want of money, but it was necessary to provide for debts which were clearly bad. Tbo amount of these bad not yet been fully ascertained. The suggestion that the bank should amalgamate with the Bank of Now Zealand was impracticable, and the suspension of future dividends was regarded as unw.se. The call would be payable in instalments. The Berlin newspapers are indignant at the remarks in Prince Bismark’s journal warning the Emperor not to have a too intimate friendship with England for fear oi alienating Russian friendship, as they consider their tendency will be to humble Germany before Russia. , , The Boer Trek to Mashonnland has been abandoned, but it will probably be diverted to Swaziland
