PARLIAMENTARY NOTES.
(Prom our Exchanges.) A can! has been pricked by a member, who is strenuously opposed to female franchise, and he finds that a majority of at least 10 to 12 m favor of female franchise is certain. As this comes from a resolute opponent of the change, it may be accepted as correct. The enthusiastic promoters of the change put their majority at a considerably higher figure, so that the measure is Virtually safe in the Lower House whatever may be its fate in the Legislative Council. Messrs Kelly and Mackintosh waited on Mr Ward on Thursday urging that the mail service to Preservation Inlet should be continued. The Minister said he would, confer with the head of the Department and give the request every consideration. Mr Mackintosh waited ou the Minister of Mines with reference to granting a sum of money for cutting tracks at Preservation Inlet.—Mr Seddon promised to consider whether it was advisable to place a sum on the Estimates for that purpose. _ The Inebriates Home Hill, introduced by Mr Shera, has for its object the establishment of homes in which drunkards will be treated medicinally and to abolish imprisonment for drunkenness. While the Electoral Bill was under consideration the champions of female suffrage suggested the propriety of including women as well as men in the term “ adult.”
Owing to a division among Ministers on the question of denominational education, no policy measure will be introduced providing for State aid. Some private member is, however, certain to test the feeling of the House on the matter. Mr Guinness is trying to induce the House to provide legislation to com* pel the closing of public-houses on general election day. As no amendment of the Hospital and Charitable' Institutions Amendment Act will be introduced this session, the Government will propose the continue the subsidies for another year.
