INVERCARGILL CO. v. RIVERTON C.C. The first match of tho season between an Invercargill teaur and one from the local club was played on Saturday on the Kaik ground. The visitors secured a victory, hut not at all a runaway ono as expectod, and the game proved to bo both enjoyablo and interesting. We wore pleased to see a largo number of spectators on tlio ground; it is a sign that there are still votaries of the noble game in Riverton, The visiting team having won the toss Hooted to handle the willow first, and sent in Watson and Twomlow to the bowling of John Wilson and Stewart. Twenilow, after putting together a fow runs, was caught at point by Moorhousc. Dalrymple, the next man, oily stayed for a fow overs when he was taken bv Eyes at covor point, thoreby disposing of one who it was considered was almost suro to knock tip a score. Rcade, the veteran, was thou bowled first ball; his place was filled by Burns who gave the field a good deal of leather hunting. He played a nice innings, and put together 2S before he was caught by Wilson at cover, point. G. Watson was bowled by Stewart for 13. George made a very good stand, adding 11 to the score. Th«i others did not add materially to the score, and the innings closed for a total of 81, E. P, Brown being the not out. The fielding of the Riverton men (with one exception) was most oreditable, and Wilson and Moorhouso distinguished themselvei bv making brilliant oatohes. Riverton was first represented by Lyle and Pattison to the bowling of Burns and Dalrymplo. After a verv fair stand Lyle was caught by Dalrymple at cover noint, aod shortly after Pattison lost his wicket to Dalryraple, Eves was given hisOlfiietas by P'lrn stbe first ball ho received. house played vory woll for his 8, and Moore also got hold of one or two and added 5 to the score. The innings closed for a total of 49. Burns and Dalrymple, who bowled throughout the innings, were well on the spot. The Inrercargill men in their second innings could not mak , » any stand against the bowling of Wilson. Watson was the only man that reached double figuies, and he played sound cricket '.for his 16. The last wicket fell with the score at 48—one less than Kiverton s)ut together in the first attempt. The local team again fielded capitally, but the bowling was the chief feature. Wilson and Stewart bowled the whole innings, the former securing six wickets for 18 rans, among those taken by him boing Reade and Dalrymple, two of the best bats, who wore clean bowled. Stewart was also in excellent form, and his average was a good one. Lyle and Wilson commenced tho second innings for Riverton. Lyle made a very good stand, but Wilson was soon bowled without scoring, and Moore, who took his place, did not reign long, but Moorhouse hit out freely his 14 being got by vigorous and good play.
