OREPUKI Y. APARIMA PIRATES. [By Lone-Out.] newly formed Aparima Pirates Football Club played tbeir maiden match last Saturday against Orepuki. The Pirates being three men short, took three of the Rivertonians. 'Woods, Stewart, and Calder, to fill the vacancies. Tbe Orepuki men were at the train to meet tbe visitors, and led them to the convincing ground. Time being limited, ifwas agreed to play two spells of 30 minutes each.VSouness captained the visitors and Crowther tbe home team, the latter winning the toss, McKay kicked off for the visitors. The ball was well returned by Hirst, and the visitors were compelled to act on the defensive, but through some hard kicking on the part of the Orepuki forwards, the visitors were forced down. After the kick-off, play again was confined to the Pirates’ 25, where Hirst secured the ball and passed to Barry, who went through all the visitors and scored try No. 1 for Orepuki. The kick at goal went wide. The home team continued to press the visitors until they were allowed a free kick for the off-side play of one of the visitors. Crowther took the ball and dropped a pretty goal. Half-time was now called with Orepuki 4 points to Pirates’ nil. After the kick off the play w,is pretty equal, tbe ball travelling up and down the field. Hirst had the oval passed to him, and had a pot at goal but just missed it. Shortly after the same player again obtained possession, and managed to laud the ball over the line. The kick was entrusted to Sydney Hirst, but it was a difficult angle and no goal resulted. From this till call of time the visitors tried to score, but the backs of the home team wore too goodjjand a very enjoyable gam in a win for Orepuki by 5 uoints to »?Y/For the winners, W. Hirst, Tiellie and the best of the backs, while Crowther, (Fortune And Forbes were the pick of the fm-ward*,-' although they all played a good game. For tho losers, McKay Bros, all three played a good game, especially Murdoch, who is fast developing into a firstclass player. Calder at three-quarters played a fair game. Of the forwards, Molioy, Woods, Stewart and Murchison were the best. Messrs N. McLean, Cross and Cuff I acted as referee and umpires respectively, and gave every satisfaction.

f NA well attended meeting of the Riverton Football Club was held at the Globe Hotel on Saturday last, when it was decided to hold the Annual Ball on Wednesday, 31st July. A strong committee was elected, and, as the match,Riverton v. Invercargill Pirates, comes off on the above date, and most of the visiting; team intend staying to trip the light fantastic, it should be highly successful. All the clubs in Southland will, it is to be hoped, bo represented; and footballers are requested to appear in costume. The committee intend to leave no stone unturned towards making it a complete success, and have fixed the price of admission so as to place it within the range of all, and given a finenight, I shall be greatly surprised if the Drill Shed does not present a very animated appearance.
