From returns just published, the ministerial expenses for the year appear to have been as follows; —Travelling allowances, L 1323; travelling expenses, L 777 ; expenses of attendance, L7lll ministerial residences, repairs, maintenance and furniture, LS9-I. The Minister of Mines, L 799 ; Native Minister, L 495; and Sir J. Vogel MB3, were the most expensive travellers. The Premier’s and Sir J. Vogel’s' [ houses cost the largest amounts to maintain. Families. Among his papers was! found an anonymous letter warning him that Mrs Bowern would doubtless visit him as she had done before. Mrs Bowern’s confession was read. It stated that about 12 months ago she got into trouble with a gentleman who bad gone to England ; that “Russell performed an operation on her, which resulted in abortion, and charged her £lO 10s. . About five months ago she wrote to him to do a similar thing, but he refused. Dr Russell was also committed for- trial for procuring abortion on Kate Eisher. Jane Richards, who was accused with him, was discharged. The case re Kate Connolly will be taken to-morrow. : i Dunedin, Friday.
At the Presbyterian Synod it was announced that suslontation fund dividend of £lO4 5s 6d had been declared.
