AN EXTRAORDINARY SPEECH.

.Much'amusement'has been created in Glamorganshie by a remarkable speech by a .Mr John Jones, delivered before the Mumbles Local Board. It appears that a deputation presented themselves " before the Board to protest against the .'ill-usage ,bf doiikeys at the Mumbles Head received at the hands of their ! drivers. The deputation was introduced by Mr Jones, who said the question was .a particular one, but one with which, he

considered, it was within the province of the, Board to deal. It.might be said; that,; as an assembly, of asses,, they might approach the question with a certain amount 'of brotherly' love, (Laughter.) They knew from Holy Writ that in the days of the Judges of Israel valiant Samson slew a multitude of Philistines with the jawbone of an ass, and he bad often thought that the inhuman treatment the poor asses received was due in a great measure to the dead Philistines calling on prosperity to revenge them —(Laughter.) for since the Samson episode the vendetta had gone, on to the disgrace of humanity, (Hear, hear.) Mr Jones, continuing, said—l presume the deputation selected me to plead the cause of the poor asses as the biW'fsf ass on the Board—(laughwhether this is so or not I care nothing., AH I ask is this, Let. us ply our jawbones to*night, so that we shall determine to do all we can to, improve the condition and lighten, the distress and., sufferings of our; fellow-crea-, tures-h-(loud laughter)—the asses side.tbe Board (renewed laughter) and prove, the truth of the poet's words "A,fellow feeling makes us wondrous kind," (Roars of laughter.) Let not be said.that we are careless or unfeeling in this matter. (Cheers.) I have much pleasure in introducing the deputation, whose labours I hope will have the effect of ameliorating the condition of the, asses inside and outside this Board. (Loud laughter and applause.)
