She is capable of steaming l4s knots. Wellington, Tuesday. The lumpers' strike lias .thoroughly broken up, and the men have resumed work at previous rate of wages. Referriug this morning to the Central Prison which is being erected on Mount Cook, one of the most prominent positions in Wellington, Justice Richmond said it was a perfect won<ler to him that it should be erected there, and he viewed it with disgust. lie deprecated that view of penal discipline which confined men within such limits, aud his own view was that it cou'd not be carried out within snch limits. He had no hesita*ion in paying he looked upon the erection of thin building with absolute disgust. He did not know what the authorities thought, but.it seemed to him terrible to place a large penal institution in the midst of a large city, and thus put crime in such a prominent position. He did not know what the Te Aro people thought about it, but he would be Terr sorry to live under the walls of a gaol all his life. The main thiughe regretted in regard to the gaol itself was want of room and want of proper classification. To his mind it was inhuman to confiue persons for life. Prisoners ought to be able to rise by good conduct to some comforts of existence, and that might be managed if penal establishments were on a auffi. ciently extensive scale.

At the eriminal sittings, May Maria Scanlan was found guilty of stealing a dress skirt. It had been .*ent to the owner by a firm of drapers, but as no one was at home it was left in an outhouse. Charles Moxham and John MeLennau were also found guilty of r dicing a country man named Campbell of £'3o. They had shepherded liim for some time, and getting him into a right-of-way, eased him of hia money. Sentence w;s deferred in both instance*. John Atkinson and Daniel McLaren, charged with robbing a Chinaman, were found not guilty. The firing of the guns at Sb. Clair and Forbury heads was net so successful as regards shooting as that of the previous day. The report was not so bad as was expected, and the precautions taken to protect the houses in the neighborhood were foim 1 quite unnecessary.
