; MY SCEPTRED QUEEN. Two eyes looked fondly into thine, To read their inmost story; I (aw faith’s holy imago shine, Pure as as an angel and divine, Mantled in lustrous glory. Aii,;then I saw thou couldst not be Apght but a sceptred queen to me. ■ Vvilr' -’ 1 . ■ Twd lips to thine lay lightly pressed, Li sweet and tender fashion ; I heard the throbbings of thy breast Proclaim thy heart did love me best, ;So open was tby paasion. ‘ Then, too, I felt thou couldst not bo •Aught but a sceptred queen to me. I ip.... Two voices bade their last adieu, :.;01$th many a sigh at parting: Heaven’s radiant skies were bending blue, Ai if-to mock us, for they knew Oiir bitter tears were starting. Alas talas! Fate’s stern decree Had tom my sceptred queen from me. • ■::# ; .AT THE PORTAL. Mosses, are green in the untrod walks, In this broken fountain the water sleeps, One white statue the silence mocks With a gestured promise it never keeps. Rank, upon rank, and file upon file, All silent the lily trumpeters stand, In the bushed suspense of the dusky aisle, Waiting— 'Still waiting the word of command. ■ ■ Closed sit the portal—the curtain drawn—,Ts it sleep or death that broods on the air P Oh, when shall the far-off morning dawn I The morning of mornings—heavenly fair— When the sculptured lips shall utter their «7 • < ' ; Andthe lily trumpets ring glad alarms, , When window and portals open fly And yield my love again to my arms P '
