DUNEDIN MARKETS, i Bubnsidk, Sept. 2. Fat Cattle. — 112 head forward. The quality was on the whole good, with a small proportion prime beef. The small supply would under ordinary circumstances have excited a strong demand and increased values; but as the trade have good stocks on hand from previous markets, biddings were languid, and unless for a few choice lots, buyers had the pull. Best bullocks brought up to £ll7s 6d, cows to £9 2s 6d. Fat Sheep.—242l penned, including about 450 merinos. Of the markets for the past few weeks this one was the most sluggish. Some lines of sheep were indifferently penned, and under the circumstances neither buyer nor vendor had any line to guide them. People sending stock forward should allow their agents absolute control over their lots, and hold them responsible for the manner in which they would be submitted to buyers. At this day'B market, although there was a noticeable decline in values, there oould be no line given of prices, because of the inequality throughout. Pigs.—Altogether an over supply; 332 of all descriptions being penned, and prices declined fully 7s 6d per head on porkers and bacon pigs. Wool.—The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report as follows : —Catalogues to hand, via San Francisco, up to the close of the third series of London wool sales confirm the fall recorded from time to time during the sales, and the spirit evinced then appears to have undergone considerable, fluctuations. Our London circular reports: " The result of the series recently concluded has been disappointing to all sections of the trade. The irregularity of the biddings, which has been so marked a feature throughout the course, has tended to complicate the situation alike for buyers and sellers. Evidence of this is afforded by the abnormal withdrawals from the daily catalogues and the exceptional quantity found to bo on hand for disposal hereafter. The Home trade, being tho chief operators, was unable 'to support values. Some help was obtained from Ge/man buyers, but the French section exhibited much hesitancy and discrimination in their biddings. The initiatory hardening in the value of crossbreds had the effect of making sellers eager to realise, and the daily offerings throughout the second and third weeks bore undoubted testimony to this position. The natural result followed. The demand being fitful, the daily withdrawals showed an abnormal percentage, and although a portion of these were either re-offered and disposed of publicly or placed by private treaty, there remained at the close a large ■ residum to swell the total already indicated as curried forward for future disposal. Considerable disappointment was manifest when it was discovered lhafc much of the merino wool from New Zealand was more yolky in condition, and the hogget portion not so well «rown as thlt of the preceding clip. Much of Mid wool received from the Au-tra-
lian Colonies proved not to be in good condition. 'i Ijujo üßi.owitrd features caused the supplies of faulty (j'.'owths at this time of the year to be sensibly increased, and was therefore not without it.-i influence in depressing values of auch descriptions. Coarse wools from New Zealand, on the contrary, were well up to the average both iu point of growth and condition, and the competition for theso throughout the sales was fairly animated, with slight fluctuation in values. While during the closini; of the week the lone of the room was somewhat better, and greater regularity was manifested, no quotable change in values could be recorded." Sheepskins—At Monday's sales prieeo were throughout in favor of buyers. The London Wt>i>] market deters purchasers, and last week's rales were not maintained. Rabbitskins are readily saleable at about 25 per cent, under last years' quotations. Hides.—No alteration in values. The supply barely meets the local demand at for prime up to 4£d per lb; light, inferior, and cut, from 2hd. Tallow. —Almost unsaleable, and quotations nominal —w'z, good to prime, 19s to 21s; medium, 16s to 18s; rough fat, 10s to 12s per cwt. Wheat.—Millers are disposed to buy at late quotations, but prime samples are scarce. There havo been no transactions of any importance during the week, as country holders are firm. For medium sorts and chick feed there is an active demand at improved rates. Oats.—The market is much improved in tone, and really prime parcels are not to be had. First-class oats have been sold at up to 2s OJd ; ordinary milling aud short bright feed, Is lOd to Is lid ; medium and inferior, Irom Is Id. Barley remains unchanged. Local buyers
have either stocks on hand or decline speculating. Horse Market.—Messrs Wright, Stepheneon, and Co. report for the week as follows: —The demand for young draughts reported in our laststillcontinues, asalso does that for first-class hacks and light-harness horses. As few of these kiudsof horses were forward for last Saturday's sale, only a small business was transacted. We quote first-class draughts at from £25 to £3O; medium, £ls to £2O; first-class backs and light-harness horses, £l7 to £25 ; medium, £3 to £l4 ; light and inferior, £3 to £5. Mel/Bofene, Sept. 1. The manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Co., of New Zealand, reports of the local grain market as follows: —Produce— Shipping wheat, quiet, 4s 2d to 4s 3d. Malting barley, 4s to 4s 6d ; quotations nominal. New Zealand outs (feed sorts), 2s 9d to 3s ; milling, 3a to 3s id. New Zealand oats (under bond,) 2s Id to 2s 3d.
