CRUEL ELOPEMENT.
A cruel case of elopement (said the Glasgow Herald) is reported from Murton, near Sunderland. The delinquet, George Dawson, is a man with a family of nine children, and he has resided in the Tillage named for a long period. He was looked up to as a pattern to others, being a class leader and local preacher in connection with th® Primitive Methodists. The woman, who has left a husband and three voung children behind her, is the wife of a man named Stoker, living in Woods-terrace, Murton Colliery, where she carried on an extensive millinery business. She left home on Thursday, May 21, ostensibly to go to Newcastle to pay the tradesmen’s accounts and to buy new goods, taking with her upward of £looin cash. It would appear that the Sight of the guilty pair has been contemplated for some time, as all Mrs Stoker’s wearing apparel has gone from her late home., Dawson left home, saying that be was going to Silkswoith to seek medical advice, but he has taken nothing with him. There is no elue as to where the man and woman have gone to. Mrs Stoker has left her husband and family in comparatb e destitution ; also her father and mother, an aged couple, who lived in the house with her husband and herself. It was at first thought that the woman had gone among some friends, as she did not return so early as expected. Her non-appearance caused inquiries to be made with the result reported.
