LIFE AT THE KIMBERLEY DIAMOND FIELDS.
The following picture of the vicissitudes of life at the diamond fields is taken from the KmberUy Times, and. is not calculated to make I one fall in love with the region of. precious stones:—The bold and daring manner with which crime is committed iu the highways aud byeways of the diamond. - fields just now alarms everyone residing here. No person is>afe who. has tf travel over the roads even in the immediate vicinity of the towns, nor to walk across the squares or through the streets . No man’s property is secure iu house or store. the burglar and the highwayman are' , the busiest people in the community, and they are continually on the .alert watching for prey and 'spoil. Lock' and key are no longer safeguards against the burglar, nor is the revolver ! of much use against highway attacks. Burglaries are committed in the uipst open places, and the burglar of the diamond fields is as perfect ad expert as the professional burglar of the great cities of Europe. He bolts, locks, and bars with the greatest ease, and there are none sj strong but he defi es them. The highwaymen go together in gangs, and the traveller is overpowered before he knows where he is. Resistance only makes makers worse, for the villains who lie in wait for the unwary traveller are cruel and; merciless, and if taking life is necessary to getting hold of a traveller’s; money they will not hesitate to commit-the greater crime. 1 ; ‘
