WALLACE COUNTY JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

President, Dr Young; Vice-Presidents, a F. Woodward, D. Me Jallura and J. W. j; Hamilton. 1 Stewards : Messrs M. Instone, Fraser Wohlers, Lyon, Burns, Hayes, F. Sutton, Borne, Livingstone, Towler, E. Gr'filths, s Burg-ss, J. Steel, J. Pattison, J. McKenzie, £ James Hay, John Hay and T. Booth. 1 Judge, Mr J. W. Hamilton; Clerk of Scales, j Mr E. Willett ; C’LERK OF COURSE, Mr ? J. Wohlers ; Starter, Mr J. L, e. Treasurer & Secretary, Mr J. W. Bridge ; f Handicapper, Mr H. Howells. This annual race meeting took place 1 yesterday, in Mr McCallum’s paddock j on the Highlands, adjoining the town ■ boundary, the gratuitous use of which . had been kindly granted for the occasion. The weather was all that could be j desired, contrary to the misgivings of the previous day, when appearances indicated anything but favourable > weather. For a natural one, the , course was good, although rendered rather heavy by the rain of the prei vious two days. Although the entries in most of the events were not so numerous as could have been desired, contests were close, and in several instances there were very exciting finishes. The programme was disposed of in exceptionally good time, as may be gathered from the fact that although a start was not made till one o’clock, the last of the eioht events was finished by half-past five—a result due in a great measure to the promptitude of the Secretary, Mr Bridge, and the officers of the Club, amongst whom may be mentioned Mr M. Instone (judge), Mr J. Lyle (starter), and Mr j. Wohlers (clerk of course). With the exception of the protest entered against Cathedral, the winner of Eace, nothing approach, ing a dispute occurred in connection with the carryingout of the programme, and the greatest good order prevailed amongst the assemblage on the course, which numbered not less than 400. Mr J. Hay, of the Havelock Hotel, “ran” the booth, and Mr Gregg, of Invercargill, had the fruit and luncheon stall,JJboth of whom seemed to do good | business; while Mr Bentley had his ’ totalisator on the ground, which was moderately well patronised, a total of i <£lso having been put through. The : first event sent away was the ‘ Handicap Hurdle Race of 15 sots. Distance, 2i miles, over eight flights of i hurdles 3ft. 6in high, j Hay’s Cathedral, 10st (G. Smith) 1 I Sheridan’s Mountain Deer, 10st (McNab) 2 i Bridge’s Waitaki, 9st 71bs (Pankhurst) 0 ‘ This was rather an extraordinary \ \ event. It was thought that there \ would have been a good contest bes tween the Deer and Cathedral, and 1 the betting was pretty equal between these , two horses; but the chesnut t baulked badly, and thus knt any . chance off carrying of the stakes. The t hurdles were partly to blame for this, 1 they-being very narrow, and it was 5 consequently almost impossible to f | keep the horses straight on to them i Cathedral also baulked several times, t and had Waitaki taken the hurdles he 1 could have comfortably eantered home, k bu L . he followed the bgd example set , him by the leaders, and several times j obstinately refused to negotiate the e obstacles. The greatest uncertainty 3 existed at times regarding the result of "the race, as each horse successively baulked. Cathedral led oyer the. .first e two hurdles, the others baulking at s the second; but at the third hurdle 9 this horse slewed round and only '• cleared the supports of the hurdle, f He kept on his course, however,.until f he reached the sixth jump, at which he baulked, „The Deer in the mean--8 time had recovered himself, and. took the lead, but-refusing to'go over the ■ hurdles Cathedral came to the front f again, went an extra round, in cone sideration of not having taken third i hurdle properly, and still came in an e easy winner. Waitaki took Abe last t hurdle a few lengths in advance of the I Deer, but coming up, the straight the 3 latter quickly showed in front and 3 passed the judge a couple of lengths 1 ahead. A protest was lodged against | Cathedral by the owner of Mountain . j Deer on the ground that Cathedral I did not take the thir l hurdle; but the ■ ' protest was disallowed, as the horse p 1 cleared the supports to the hurdle, , and, in the absence of flags, that was held to bo a proper jump. At a later • period of the day, a private match was > partly arranged between Cathedral and | the Deer, hut it ultimately fell through. The totalisator showed a total of 24 . tickets, II of which were on the winner, the dividend being £2 Bs. 1 Maiden Plate, of 7 aovs. Distance, IK miles. Fraser’s Lidy Bird ... Shortly afterwards Eowena bolted off the course, which put her out of the race. Eraser’s pair* kept the lead to the end, despite a game effort on the part of Te Kooti to d'spute the honors. Lady Bird led past the judge a couple of lengths in advance of the others, well in hand. Totalisator: 29—16 —£1 12s.
