Customs Revenue for the week ending 6lh

DUNEDIN MARKETS,

Henry Driver (on behalf of the Colonial C r-eperative Agricultural and Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited) reports for week ending March 11, 1885, as follows ; Fat Cattle—l 69 yarded to-day at Burnside. The quality of one-third was prime, the balance inferior or little better than stores. Competition was fairly active for prime sorts which description were about on a par with’last week’s rates, hut inferior quality was hard to sell even at reduced prices. Prime bullocks fetched from £7 to £9; medium, or fair to good, £6 to £6 17s 6d ; inferior, £5 to £5 17s 6d; cows, up to £7 2s 6d We yarded and sold 4 6 head at for bullocks up to £9, and cows up to £7 2s 6d. We quote prime beef at 20s per 1001 b; inferior, 17s to 18s. Pat Calves— Twenty-two yarded, and sold under fair competition up to 20s each. Fat sheep—244l penned, of which only a very small proportion were merinos. The quality was good, but notwithstanding this being the case we are unable to report any improvement on last week’s prices; indeed a shade less had to be taken to clear all the medium to fair pens. Crossbreds (prime) fetched from 12s to 15s 6d; fair to good, 8s 9d to 11s 9d; merinos, up to 8s Od. Fat Lambs—39l penned, and all sold under fair competition at from 5s to 10s 9d. Fat Pigs.—223 yarded, mostly suckers, except a few pens of porkers. _ Of the latter class our sales mainly consisted. Suckers sold up to 17s, and porkers up to 82s. Store Cattle.—’Very few lots changing hands. We have a few inquiries for well grown bullocks in forward condition. 6 Store Sheen.—We have several lots on hand, both crossbreds and merinos. Prices ruling are not up to late quotations, consequently few lots are changing hands. We have placed some lines of crossbred ewes up to 11s, and have placed 50 Southdown rams to various breeders at £5 5s each. Store Lambs.— We have placed privately during the week several lota of, crossbred lambs up to Bs. , , , , Sheepskins. —Our sales were for butchers green crossbreds up to Is 8d; merinos, Is 5(1; lambskins, Is 8d; prices for dry skins unchanged. Wool. —We offered a small catalogue on Friday last, and hud a full attendance of local buyers. All lots offered were sold under good competition, and prices were fully on a par with any sale of the season. Hides.— Values unenanged. Good, heavy, well-flayed hides in good demand. ' fallow. — Market remains inactive Values : Well-rendered, up to 26a; medium, 24s ; inferior, 21s; butchers’ rough fat, 12s lo 16s. Grain. —Wheat: Very few of even superior lots changing hands, buyers waiting on new crop. Several lots of inferior wheat have been placed by us during the week at from 2s to 2s sd. We quote : For prime parcels of milling velvet, up to 3s 6d ; red straw, 3a is, we consider, top value. Oats: New crop coming in slowly, and we quote about Is lid per bushel as top price. So far no really first-class samples have come into our hinds. Little doing in old oats, and, except for local requirements, none are being sold. Barley : Market at a standstill, waiting arrival of new crop. Potatoes. —Our sales during the week are confined to kidm ys, for which we obtained up to £2 sb. We have numerous inquiries for good sound Derwent*. Horse Market. —Wright, Stevenson, and Co. report: —We held our weekly sale on Saturday last, as usual. The number of horses forward was not large, but for wbut draughts there ware in therefwas a good demand at quotations. Strong upstanding light-harness horses are also in request. We quote firstclass draughts at from £27 to £34: medium, £l7 to £2l; good hacks and light harness horses, £2O to £25 ; medium £lO to £ls ; light and inferior, £3 to £6.
