OEAKA SCHOOL. TO THE EDITOR, Sir,— Surely, it must be a stretch of imagination on the part of the Colac deputation re the 40 children of school ago, which they aay are to attend the school they wish the Board to erect at Oraka; and as most of the children from the mill attend school, I think the Paihi is more desenrmg of consideration at the hands of the Board,—l am, &c., Paihi.

Thr e cottages adjoining also succumbed. The insurances are:—Belgrate House (owned by Mr D. C. Urquharfc, and occupied by Mrs Morrison), £1250, of which £625 was reinsured in the New Zealand Office, and, of this, £3OO reinsure lin the Colonial Office. Sir Crawford’s cottage was insured for £75, and the furniture for £BO, both in the Norwich Unioe. The | building owned by Mr McK-iy was insure I for £2OO, and the furniture t'so in the Ham- , burg-Magdeburg. Mr Hardie’s house whicn * was seriously damaged, was insured for £75 in the Colonial Office, The following appears in the Gazette —The Government desires to publicly notify that it has received numerous offers for actiuo service in the Soudan at the present juncture and to express its gratification at the patriotic spirit displayed by those volunteers and i others who have so generously offered themselves. At the same time the Government ment has to intimate that, however desirous it might be to form a body of New Zealand troops to assist Her Majesty’s forces in the locality in question, it can take no stops towards that object wiehout the sanction of Parliament. Ten defendants were charged with sly grog selling at Nenthorn. Fines ranging from £lO to £3O were inflicted in several cases. See fourth page.
