APARIMA ROAD BOARD.

The Board met at Foster’s Hall yesterday afternoon. There were present ; Messrs Stevens, Officer, Hazlctt, Kennedy, William Walker, John Walker, and Hamilton—the latter, in absence of the chairman, being ap pointed to preside. Letters were read from Mr Saunders re exchange of road at Gladfleld. Mr Mclntyre here entered and took his seat as chairman. There was read a list of moneys placed to the credit of d. p. sections, as follows: Jacob’s River Hundred, £23 5s ; Waimatuku township, £3l 2s 6d ; Hodgkinson township, £lll2s 6d; Drummond township, £2 18s 8d; Oreti Hundred, £l2 10s ; Danieltown, £3 Is. The Clerk read memorandum of agreement between the Aparima Road Board and Now River Road Board re apportionment of assets and liabilities, which was agreed to. Letter read from New River Road Board, stating that they had levied a rate of f d in the pound, for year ending March next, and that until rate had been collected they would bo unable to pay the interest and sinking fund.—Received. A number of accounts were passed for payment. Mr Hamilton called attention to the slate of the r >ad at Otaiiai Bush, which was impassable, and in consequence at the sungealion of the members of the subdivision, Mr Stuck had allowed the traffic to go through one of his paddocks. Ho (Mr Hand ton) thought that Mr Stuck should be male some allowance for granting that concession, and moved that a sum of £2 10s be voted. —Capt. Stevens se: Glided.—Mr Kennedv said there was a very similar case in his district—Mr Clark, who had allowed teams t j go through his paddocks when they could not go ou the road.—The motion was carried. The Clerk read a statement of the financial position of the subdivisions. Thos; having a credit balance wore : Mt. Pleasant, £3SO 1 Is 8d; Waimatuku, £75 3s 3d; d. p. bloeks, £330 8s 8.1. Those having a deb t balance were: Hed ion B j.sh, £219 19s 3d; Jacob’s River, £lls ; New River, 11207 10s Id.

A discussion arose on a proposal by Mr Walker that the Board petition the Council to levy a rate of id in the pound in Heddon Bush subdivision. The roads there wore in such a state that the id rate supplied very little funds for their repair. It was suggested that the proper course was for the ratepayers to petition for a special rate, but the answer to this was that it was doubtful if such a petition would receive the statutory number of signatures, as the block was surrounded by two large estates, the owners of which would in all probability oppose such a proposal. Mr Kennedy spoke strongly as to the state of the roads in that district, as did also Messrs White and Coombes, who appeared as a deputation from the settlers, and who expressed their willingness to pav a heavier rate so as to enable them to get'the roads repaired. The Chairman and Mr Hamilton expressed their sympathy- with the settlers. No definite steps were taken in the matter.

Capt. Stevens, one of the trustees of the sinking fund, stated that although lie had secured an investment for a portion of the funds, the money could not be obtained from Wellington, notwithstanding that application had been made three months ago. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Chairman of trustees regarding the matter; after which the Board adjourned.
