Auckland, Friday,
A landslip occurred at Emily place excavations this evening, as the result of heavy rain. The men were just leaving their work when pieces fell from the cliff as they ran for their lives. 1000 yards of earth fell, burying drays and killing one horse, but the driver escaped. Beach road is blocked for three chains and the traffic stopped. Fortunately noue of the numerous ’busses were passing at the time, or there w'ould have, been serious loss of life, or had the fall occurred earlier few of the working party at the east side could have escaped instantaneous death.
Wellington, Friday. The Mawhera, from Greymoutb, this morning, when crossing the bar took soundings, and the lowest depth of water was 19ft. Mr A. E. Grmnuee*, was a passenger by the steamer.
The Health Officers to-day inspected the Te Anau before she came alongside the wharf, and also the barque Sophia Luhrs, from Newcastle. In both cases everybody was found to be in good health. A report having been published that the doctor in charge of the quarantine station at Napier has been negligent in his duties to the small-pox patient Mouatt, the Colonial Secretary wired to the Mayor of Napier, and the following reply was received:—l have had a daily written report from the doctor at the quarantine station, and he has been seen every day by orderlies. He also visited the patient at certain hours both day and night. [ can positively contradict the rumour.”
Christchuech, Friday. Mr Stout arrived at Lytteitou by special train and sailed by the Harbor Board’s steam tug Lyttelton for Wellington at 3.30 p.m. Dunedin, Friday. The baby show to-day produced 185 entries, including seven pairs of twins. Owing to the enormous crush of sight-seers the judging had to be prostponed till Monday.
