INSTONE. Jan. 11,1884. GLADSTONE & NORTHEND NURSERIES, NEAR INVERCARGILL One of the finest collections of FRUIT Trees in the colony. ROBERT BIRRELL, IN again soliciting the patronage of his numerous customers and the public generally, tenders his sincere thanks for their very liberal support in past seasons, and solicits a continuance of their patronage, and assures them that all orders entrusted to Ms care will receive prompt attention. PLANTING. Settlers contemplating planting should procure Trees or Bushes from a nursery situated in an exposed place, as frees raised in sheltered land never succeed so well when removed to more unfavorable locali ics. BLIGHT PROOF VARIETIES. I have a few varieties of Apple trees that are blight-proof root and branch, and a large assortment on the blight-proof stock guaranteed blight-proof below the graft. I would call tl.e special attention of intending planters to my stock of Fruit and Forests Trees, and Ornamental Trees and Shrubs, which is remarkaby large, varied, and healthy, this season. To meet the increasing demand I have secured eight acres of land at Northend, within three minutes walk of Dee street, which is admirably adapted for nursery purposes. A considerable portion lias already been planted, and, although occupying a very exposed position, the young trees are strong and vigorous, and in excellent condition for planting out. THE SOIL. In that quarter of the nursery where fruit trees and other deciduous plants arc mostly grown, is a light sandy loam, and remarkable for causing the young stock to moke fibrous roots—one of the best guarantees for the success of a young tree when transplanted. CORRESPONDENCE. To prevent delay anil disappointment, customers are re-pscl fully requested to have their names and addresses plainly written, the route by which goods are to be forwarded and postal address to be distinctly stated, ami orders to be made out in regular e lumns, one arti.le only on a line. PACKING. Correspondents in distant parts of the Colony may rely on every care being taken in packing. I have received many complimentary letters in past, seasons on my system of packing, and the satisfactory condition in which trees and plants reach their destination.
