Latterly deceased had talked about poisoning herself inconsequence of love troubles, but he, the brother, thought ,t was only “ gammon.’’ The Jury after retiring twice, returned a

verdict, “ That disceaaed died throug b poison administered by her own hand, but the evidence did not prove her state of mind at the time the poison was taken.” Dr Gribbes, who held the post mortem examination, in reply to the jury that there was little or no restriction on the sale of poison beyond signature in the poison book, and a statement as to the purpose for which poison was to be used, he thought the law very lax in that respect. He had been drinking heavily, and was in pecuniary difficulties. A twelve-roomed house at Richmond, occupied by H. B. Sorenson, was destroyed by fire this morning. It was insured for £SOO in the National office, and the furniture for £250 in the Standard. The damage is estimated at £IOOO. Dunedix, Tuesday. The Hon. Mr Dick inspected the Quarantine Island to-day, with a view to its suitability as a prison. A deputation of the city clergymen waited on the Hon. Mr Dick to-day to urge that the Industrial School should not be shifted to Seacliffe, nearly 30 miles from Dunedin, where the children would be out of the way of receiving religious instruction. Mr Dick admitted the force of the objection, and promised that no steps for its removal would be taken iu the meantime.
