[Press Association.] Auckland, Tuesday. Arrived : The Northumberland from London, 92 days out, with a large number of cibin passengers and Government immigrants. Tawhaio, Eewi and other chiefs, with C O. Davis, have gone toKavvan to interview Sir G. Grey. Tiie Hons. Gilles and Kerferd, Victorian ministers were taken in the steamer Victoria round the harbor. They inspected the sugar works and Caliope docks. A number of leading citizens accompanied the Victorians, who expressed themselves highly gratified. Christchurch, Tuesday.
Nine members of the House of Eopresentatives were present at a Chamber of Commerce meeting to consider the present increased railway tariff. A resolution condemnatory of the increase and in favor of the railways being managed by a non-politi-cal board, was carried unanimously in a numerously attended meeting. Tfc is proposed to run a coach from Kaiapoi in opposition to the Eaitway now that the fares are raised.
Wellinotok, Tuesday. Last session the House of Representatives, on the motion of Mr E. M. Wright, ordered that there be laid on the table a return showing the several amounts received under the headings “Wool, timber, grain, merchandise, minerals, firewood, parcels, horses, dogs, cattle and sheep,” which made up the total sum of £403,420 2s lOd, given in return 'No. 4 attached to the Public Works Estimates. The preparation of this return was commenced in the middle of November, and since then eight clerks have been continuously employed upon it. It is now approaching completion, and covers upwards of 14,000 double foolscap sheets, specially ruled and printed for the purpose. Dunedin - , Tuesday. It having transpired that the Takapuna had received considerable damage, Mr Hackworth, Collector of Customs, has recommended that an official enquiry shall take place on the return of Capt. Jones from Melbourn. The “ Doctor” Take who at Christchurch yesterday received 3 months’ imprisonment with hard labor fo r victimising a local hotelkeeper, is well known to Dunedin tradesmen, whom he also victimised to a large amount. He acted as resident surgeon of the Dunedin hospital during the absence on leave of Dr Davis, and now it is asserted that there is good reason for believing that he was not duly qualifiad. The Wtiimea Plains Railway Co held their annual meeting to-day. It has a large debit balance owing to the large amount of interest being paid on borrowed capital. It was decided to levy a rat* 1 of 3s 4J through the district concerned, in terms of the District Railways Act, for the year ending March, ISS3. As another year is nearly up the rate will actually amount to Gs Sd.
