OREPUKI CONTRACTS.

TO THE KDITOK. ; : Sib, —In your issue of 12th inst, under th heading’“Orepuki, from a correspondent,” appears a letter from a person who has evidently been seized with a des're to write, if only to tell us something we already know, namely,—the slate of the weather, ; and then, in a narrow-minded sympathetic manner (after complimenting Mr Fori on the satisfactory way he has complete 1 his contract), te'ls us something wo do not (enow, and he is sorry to record that the contract nearer Orepuki is not receiving jnstice at the hands of the contractors-—'“ As it is quite apparent to every one that there is little more thanInlf the quantity of gravel on per chain.” He next, in a very unkind and cruel m inner, tells us“ that there is a.very strong feeling in this; district, that certain contractors can simply do, just wnat they like” (certainly complimentary to the powers that be); an I then winds up with telling us what he hears as to the Inspector’s intention with respect thereto. I should have taken no notice of his remarks, wore it not that I conceive it my duty to correct misstatements which would be misleading to the public, and injurious to the contractors (who I am satisfie i will faithfully fulfil the conditions of their contract) —an object which would appear to bathe malicious aim of “ A correspondent,” without committing himself. I, as a correspondent, emphatically deny the statement of “A Correspondent” as to the quantity of gravel put ou the road ; and as a resident of the dist-ict for many years, i am happy to say that I h iva never heard or learnt that there w is any feeling in the district “that certdn contractors could do just what they like.” My opinion is that “A Correspondent’s ” liver must have been out of order, or his constitution disorganised in some way when he penned his cootr mtion to you, as a champion for the rights of the district. I would suggest that perhaps he would like a billet from the County Council as overseer of roads, or in soma other capacity.—l am, &e., Ah Tom.
