The Hon. Frederick Whitaker on Saturday afternoon tendered to the Governor his resignation as Premier owing to private business requiring his attention. Tlic resignation was accepted by bis Excellency the Governor, who therefore sent f ,- r Major Atkinson, an I entrusted Him with the duty of forming a new cabinet. Major Atkinson undertook the task, and at noon yesterday tho new Ministry were sworn in before Ilis Excellency tho Governor. Major Atkinson retains his former portfolios, and has also been appointed Premier. Air Dick resigns the portfolio of Postmaster-General and Commissioner of Telegraphs, and Air Oliver takes ohnrgc of these Departments. AH Conolly retains Ids former portfolio, and has also been appointed Attorney-General. Messrs Biullestou, Dryer, and Johnston remain as before.
Intimation is given in the Gazette that tho .CUOOO voted by Parliament for distribution to public libraries, will be apportioned on 31st January, I,SSL, and no claim will be considered thiil. shall not have been sent, in and received by the Seerotary for EJuration, Wellington, before 22nd January.
