THE LATE FIRE.

[We are not responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents. Letters must be accompanied with the name of the writer, not necessarily for publication, but’as a guarantee of good faith.]

TO THE EDITOB. Sib, —The want of a fire engine and other appliances for preventing the spread of fire in Riverton was again demonstrated at lamentable cost last Eriday morning; and to every inhabitant it must be a melancholy reflection to think that the recent fire might have been checked at the rear of the Caledonian Hotel, even with the water supply available, if the town had possessed a fire engine in working order; at anyrate such is my firm conviction. It may not be always calm weather when fire breaks out, and I trust the experience of tbo past will not be lost upon us, and that the matter will be taken up at once by our Corporation, the public, and the various insurance companies represented in Riverton, who will now, I think, see the propriety of giving substantial assistance in procuring a suitable plant, the cost of which would be but a mere fraction of the loss Riverton has just sustained. Only hoping my scribble may set the ball agoing, 1 am, &c , Geo. Reid.
