THE NEW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, RIVERTON
The now: place of worship about to be erected by the Presbyterians of this town will be a handsome building, and which, when completed, will do credit to the town.
The plan shows the chnrch inside to measure 34ft by 50ft, having the seating arranged at centre and sides, and divided bv wide passages. At the east end is the pnlp.it platform with reading desk, and cusp d railings round supported on turned balusters finished at angles with TuouldH posts supporting lamps. limmediately in front is a space for the .choir, organ, &e., the, seating of which may be removed for communion purposes. ' ‘ J ' ' At the end of the passage at platform side are two doors leading into Vestry and Session House.: , The former room Bft hv lift, and the latter 17ft 6in by lift."
The main entrance to church is a massive dnnrwav leading into a spacious vestibule 33ft Gin in length. An additional er trance has also been provided at the end of vestibule, which with the othe door above referred to, will provide ample means of exit. The roof of the church forms a striking feature in the intended design, and is of open timber construction (dressed and varnished)., consisting of a series of framed principals springing from moulded blocks at walls. The lighting isbv a series of lancet windows round both sides of building, filled with obscured glass in lead, and having stained margins round. The first gable window, which is circular and richlv ensped, is designed with rich ornamental stained glass of foliated pattern. The materials to be used for the construction arc Portland cement concrete for foundation walls, with brick superstructure built' below to resist damp. The principal doorwav, together with tablings of gables, buttresses, quoins of windows, &c.. will be erected in Portland cement. Thereof will be of iron with roofing felt underneath. Externallv the church will have a very handsome appearance; the front gable, which contains the principal entrance, is designed with a large circular cusped window of Onmarn stone richlv moulded, and with the other windows finished with foliated terminators. Ample provision has been made for ventilation in the shape of hoppers in the windows, and gabletted louvres at apex of roof, &e.The works are to be commenced immediately by the contractor. Mr .1. Boer, of South lliverton. Mr E. TV. Burwell, of Invercargill, is the architect, under whose supervision the work is to bo carried out.
