INTEEPROVINCIAL. ■ * Chbistchtjbch, August 23. The men working for Talbot aud McCiatchie, stevedores, of Lyttelton, Btruck this morning. Up to the present they have been paid 12s a day of eight hours, which has been reduced to lIR . The crews of the vessels at present under contract are working them. The st.ikers hate hitherto been paid" half-a-day if they worked even an hour only. The editor of the Canterbury "Times", received 370 applications for the C.J.O. prize to-day—the fust day on which applications are to be dated. . There are some others which are iuformal:© The proprietors of the " Echo," on© of the evening papers, charged with libel on the editor of the " Star " were reminded till Pi iday. The two meu who were ..injured at Lyttelton G-aol in the recent gale ar© recovering, from the effect's of their injuries. At' a meeting of the Benevolent Association to-day. it was proposed to close the soup kitchen at the end of next month, but this was thought premature, aud it was decided to keep up the organisation a little longer. ~ No damage has been done to the raiiway by th« weather, and no damage is reported by floods. A man, name unknown, was drowned in .the Broken river, near Castle Hill,, on the West Coast road* It is expected that. a telegraph wire will be got through to the West Coast to-morrow morning. The Colonial Bank building had a narrow escape from destruction by fire on Sunday morning. About a quarter to one o'clock |oine gentlemen who. were passing the building observed that there was a-'fire at the foot of the staircase amongst some survey polec,. etc. The door, which is generally left open, was at once closed to check the draught through the building. Afterwards the door was forced open, and a supply of buckets of water having been procured from, the Star and Grarter Hotel, the fire was quickly got under. John Cairns, a storeman engaged in the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's stores-had one of hislegs broken by a sack of grain falling upon it. r r Dtjnedin, Aug. 23. Sergeant Hanlon, Port Chalmers, received information yesterday that a aettler named William Bin-ell, resident at St. Leonards, had gone amissing. He left St. Leonards on Friday last iu a small dingy for the purpose of searching for a boat which had gone adrift during the gale on Thursday. He got across to Portobello safely, arriving about 4 p.m., aud he left half-an-hour after* ards. The wife of a storekeeper there advised him as the wind was high and increasing, not to venture across, but he left, and since then nothing has. been seen or heard of him. The police searched the bay ye»terday, but could find no trace of the boat, but this morning a boat supposed to belong to the unfortunate man was picked up. Birrell has a wife aud family. S. J.
