APARIMA RABBIT TRUSTEES.
TO THE EDITOB. Sib, —Your correspondent “ Phosphorus ” thinks no sane man would hare asked whethei a proper inspection cf this rabbit district had been made, but be gives no reason for this tbomdit, lie asserts that the inspector is an effi dent ofbe°p ; ns a sane man he should know that in public matters assertions unaccompanied by evidence go for little. I gave reasons for my b lief that the inspection was cursory and imperfect, and until refuted they hold good. “ Phosphorus” also says that the lands of the persons named, and a great many more besides,” are rabbit posted. The only woy to effeclually cope with the nuisance is by combined attack. The occasional efforts of a few will never succeed.” Why, then, should a few only be named, and not the great many more besides. Yet, because I objected to the few. being made the scapegoats of the district, since it might prove detrimental to their pecuniary interests, “Phosphorus” infers that lam one of the “worst offenders,” having said at the beginning of bis letter that 1 am animated by an unfair spirit and onesided view. My letter did not indicate a wish to obstruct the trustees. I suggested what 1 thought would be a more effectual way of accomplishing their aim, a more combined universal method than they hare pursued. It is something similar to the one adopted in West Oreti, where with a rate of 1-I6d they are likely in consequence to succi ed better than with our heavier id r per acre rate. My reasons for believing that the Act is unnecessary in settled districts is because I am convinced that [neither phosphorus, dogs, ferrets, trapping, or any other expedient, will exterminate the rabbits, but that the efforts of each individual can render them comparatively harmless on his own land, and self interest will compel him to adopt these measures.—l am, &c., Rabbit Dssteotkb.
