The Western Star. (PUBLISHED 81-WEEKLY.) WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 1880.

Ik accordance with an announcement in these columns during the past few weeks, we to-day commence the bi-weekly issue of the Western Star. It is not without some misgiving as to the result of the experiment, < r without due consideration, that the proprietors have decided to publish twice weekly, as the additional expense entailed thereby is considerable. Newspapers like any other business require to he conducted upon strict commercial principles, and if these are violated, failure will inevitably result. While desirous, therefore, of representing the district to the fullest p ssible extent, it would bo unwise for ns to produce a journal beyond the power of the district to support. It may with some force be urged that the time has not yet arrived when a biweekly paper in Hi verb m is necessary. The fact that we have determined upon making the experiment is a sufficient answer to that argument. We believe the district to he on the eve of an era of prosperity unexampled in its history, and the step w r e have taken is one means of hastening that prosperity. The public, we opine, arc well aware that a town or district cannot expect to thrive in the same degree if not creditably represented by a journal. People at a distance invariably gauge the importance of a place by the appearance of its representative journal. It will he our aini therefore in the future as it has been in the past, to present the Star from time to time in such a manner as will reflect credit upon the district and ourselves, thereby feeling assured that in doing so w r o are not only advancing our <>wn individual interests, hut th se of the district as a whole. In this spirit w r e launch the Star. upon its maiden bi-weekly voyage, and hope, that its mission will be successful to the degree necessary to warrant us issuing it very shortly still more frequently.
