Before a new committee could he appointed, it would h,e £hat notice of motion should be ‘giyen. This course -jiad not been followed,‘ consequently ho was of opinion that the uppoin<ment was illegal. Arvpther dp eel ion in which jtlie Board erred was ip not appending a chairman of the committee. He load ho desire to throw any obstacle in the way of jtlie committee, but he thought it bis duty to call attention to the irregular constitution of the \ Committee. ' ° Aft«r discussion the difficulty was cprnproiphed ]by Hr Boyd moving a motion, which yyas carried jbo the effect that the members of the new be added to the first commilipe, three to forma quorum,’ Mr Hamilton to be phariraan. Mr Boyd pointed out that such a course would enable Hie committee appointed at last meeting to give jn their report as directed ; but when the came for reporting, jt was found that there yrere only two members of the Joint committee present, and on this account Mr Boyd obtained leave to bold oyer the report till next meeting. 1 A letter was read from the Southland County pouncil, staling that the sum of £SO had been voted tp the Board for flip purpose of gravelling road to Waianiwa railway staiidn. Mr Brook enquired respecting a vote of £SO, piade by the Southland County Council for repair of road'pear Colljns 1 New subdivision.' It Vas explained that the Vote was contingent upon theßoard voting a similar sum ; but the Chairman •aid he thought from a l)e had with Mr Baldey, that the vote would be made at the next meeting of the Council irrespective of jtlie f upi being supplemented by the Board. Better read from the Seerotary to the Treasury, {transmitting forms to be filled up as required by jibe 32nd section of the Financial Arrangements Aot. The letter elated “At the same time f &m to bring under your notice the intention expressed by Government last session tp discontinue the payment of subsidies after tire expiratjoh of t'iieif 'financial period—a proposal which.’ mef yvitl| the' approval of Barliament. Wbile, : therefore, a form is sent tp yqij qs heretofore, to enable you lip supply the informal jbn required by law to be furnished to the Treasury, it is’not be taken as an indication that provision yvill be made during the approaching session for tlje payment of an J subsidy to your dis! riot.”— Received'. ’ 1 ' Letter from the Eesident Engineer, with to removal of fence and erecting a grossing on road above Waianiwa station, stating that be had applied for a money vofe for the purpose, and when it arrived the work would be taken in h&tid. The Clerk read report of Contract Committee, showing that several tenders had been accepted for authorised works in various subdivisions. ('The list of successful tenderers appeared in a formef issue of this journal).—The report was . adopted.' ' “ " The Engineer reported with regard to repairs fo qulvert on Waitnaluku Flat, near Mr Chapman’s. The repainf recommended were agreed to. It was decided toVajje po action at present with regard to the repairs of the footbridge, ’ Capt- Stevens, Chairman of the Jacob’s Rivwr Subdivision,' Jiaflcjqd iq the Ml cm jug report;— “In accordance ynllh Tesplptiop passed 'q.t ffist meeting of the Board, the Commitlee of Jacob’s River Subdivision have visited and inspected th« road leading from Groper’s Bush to the railway station there, and haye (he honor to report as follows;—The sura voted by the' 1 County Council js {otal)j inadequate to make the road as at present laid off on tlie map, and the Commitlee cannot recommend the Board to supplement that Bum to the extent it would require to make road viable ’as at'present lqid‘ offl 'Tip 3 present road line crosses three bad gullies, and then goes down a very steep part of the terrace to the river flat. All these wifi necessitate heavy' cutting , and the river flat would need formation, ft also takes ss many bends that from the point vyhere it leaves ths main road! to Otautau, the road to Fairfax station is 'only-i-i chains longer, and to Thornbury Junction ' 234- chains; consequently, the Committee are of opinion that those roads are sufficient to meet all the requirements of the present traffic, seeing that there are also sidings at Jacob’s Elver Bridge.' Blit if at any future time a shorter road should be found necessary, and the County Council is still willing to vote money for the purpose, a road might be purchased straight from the south-east point of Groper’s Bush to' the railway station. This would materially shorten'the distance qqd avoid, all cuttings except formation on the river flat.” —The phairmah said he' concurred in the report. —On g'he motion qf Mr 'J. Walker, seconded by Mr rieve, the report was adopted as rend. ' ’Mr Nurse moved—Tliat' tbe Wallace County pouhcil be informed that the Board is willing to expend the sum voted for road to Groper’s Bush station on the purchase and formation of a new road, but not on the old road.—Capt. Ms ears Young (Heddon Bash), Hamilton (Waimatuku), Brook (New River), J. Mackintosh,' ' eenr. '‘ Mr Perkins wrote, calling attention to the state of. the road at the back of Mr Wilson’s, Spar Bush'i and'requesting repairs ‘ to be effected thereon.—The Engineer was authorised to expend a 'sum not ' exceeding £l* in repair of the road hi question. J On the motion of the Hon, W. H. Nurse, it •was resolved that a deputation, consisting of the (Chairman of the Board and'the members for Jacob’s'River Subdivision, wait upon the Cquntjr Council arid'urge that the road leading to Pouratihd Bridge bo tnade'a County road, and that the same be formed and gravelled. — Carried. "Mr J. ’ Walker moved—’That the sum of £35 ipe voted towards gravelling road leading ‘from

Wulker.j the sum pf £9 wasvoted towards the repair of bridge near Spar| Bush—Hedden Bush Subdivision to bear the cost.'

Mr J. Walker referred to the probability of the subsidy to the Board being discontinued in future, and thought tliqt in that case it was user less for the Board to parry on. He suggested that tjie member for the district be communicated with, with n view to his eliciting fpqm Parliament whether, in the event pf the B oat ’d qjprgjjig, increased representation would be given to the County Council.—A niqtiqn was drafted by Mr Boyd, apd coneu’pd in by the Board, embodying I\iy Walker’s suggestion; but, on further coiysideration, it was resolved to put the raption in for in of a petition, and that a copy of same be presented ' tp' both Houses of Parliament through thp members fpy {dip district —Mp M‘Pangbari and tjje Hon. W. H. Nurse. Capt. Stevens, the Road Board ? s representative on the Riverton Harbor Board, tendered his resignation as such. He had attended three nqeetings qf the Board at winch there was no quorum. He thought it a farce for men to meet every month and deliqeraie about an expenditure of £3 or £4. He would not hiyve taken this step if he thought the board had auy work to do. — The resignation was accepted. It wa| agreed that the rate of wq,ges for surfacemen he 7? pgr day. After a number pf accounts bad been passed for payment, the Board adjourned to a day to be named* by the Chairman. 1
