The following letter from the New Zealand liifle Association was received last week by the local Secretary, Mr C. Kingswell: —“ I am instructed to notify to local secretaries that the following? arrangements have been made for the Nelson meeting:—l. The shooting will commence on Monday, Ist March—by a typographical error 2nd is stated in tho programme. 2. The Government have agreed to refund the railway fares of Volunteer members proceeding to Nelson, but the fare must be paid in the first instance, and a receipt taken from the booking clerk. Upon production of such receipt through tho officer commanding the district to the Defence Office, the faro will be refunded. 3. The Union Steam Company have agreed to convey members of the Association (and horses) to and from Nelson at greatlv reduced fares. ’O y § But each competitor must obtain from the local Seci clary the certificate (as provided last year) showing that die is a member of the Association, and proceediug to Nelson to take pari in the shooting. Members from Auckland, Thames, &c., will embark at Onehunga, and return by that route. If necessary a special steamer will leave Wellington on the morning of the 28th ins*., arriving at Nelson on the same day. 4. I shall be glad to receive, by the 14th inst., the names of Volunteer officers desirous of acting as register keepers on the terms mentioned in my circular of the 20rli October last.”' A commercial traveller arrived at Napier the other day (says the “Telegraph,”) a case of dutiable goods having p eceeded. After securing the case and getting it put on ihe express cart, ho wasaccosted by the wharfinger, ‘Heigh!, what are you doing with that ease? There is 14s to pay on it.’ ‘ Oh ! tint’s all rignt, here you are.’ And traveller and box went on. The wharfinger rememho' ed something, and sung out again, “ Heigh ! there’s 3s Gd \va fage on that.’ The money was paid, and again the cart drove off ; but had not gone far before a commission agent cal led out, ‘ Heigh! where are you taking that case? There’s receiving and deli'.ei ing, 5s 6J to pay on it.’ Said the traveller -with a sigh, and paying the money, ‘ I suppose it’s all right, but while I’ve got my hand in my pocket does anybody want any more? Do you want to build a quay, or a wharf, or maybe you want a breakwater; just say the word before I go.’ And everybody looked injured like, and the case and tho traveller departed in peace.”
