ENGLAND V. NEW SOUTH WALES,
SYDNEY, February 7
j The return match, England v. Sydney, ' was commenced to-day. Lord Harris winning the toss elected to take advantage : of the fine wicket that had been prepared. The batting was splendid, and up to the luncheon adjournment the batsmen appeared to treat the bowling with perfect inj difference. At that point of the game the j telegraph showed 3—41 —217, but on the i fall of Ulyett’s wicket to a splendid catch •; by Evans, immediately after play being resumed, a collapse followed. The eighth i wicket fell for 255, and the innings closed ; for 267. Charles Bannermann again hurt ; his right hand and had to retire from the | field. When the stumps were drawn for the ■ day Sydney had made 53 for the loss of two ! wickets. The scores are :
| . Total 170 i Mtfapdoch’s was a grand display of batting. ;He went in second. The scene that ensued ;on his being given out in the second innings beggars descriptions. The crowd i took possession of the ground and rendered ! further play impossible. i The mateh resumes this afternoon. The English umpire’s conduct was scandalous, ■ but the larrikin outburst is universally condemned. | 3 p.m. | Seven of the New South Wales team are out for 4-9. [They require to make 42 more to t save a one-innings defeat.]
