THE STRIKE IN SYDNEY.

A telegram to the Melbourne ‘ Telegraph ’ in reference to the seamen’s strike at Sydney gives the following fuller particulars of what has been briefly reported in our special telegrams :—“iS'o settlement of the difficulty has yet been arrived at, but the chairman of the A.S.N. Company has written to the * Sydney Morning Herald,’ offering to adjust the strike on the following basis, viz. :— * That the seamen pay the expenses of sending all the Chinamen in the company’s service back to China; or to leave the Chinese crews to the China Noumea, and Fiji trades, without disturbanance if the company agree not to employ Chinese in other trades. Provided that if the company is not content with this, they should add the Cooktown trade to their list.’’ This would just cover the lines in which the company has to compete with yellow labor. It is regarded as an equitable proposal, and sanguine hopes arc entertained that it may lead to a solution of the difficulty.- A panic has, however, arisen amongSS the bootmakers, in consequence of a rumor that the proprietors of some of the large factories intended to introduce Chinese labor into their establishments. At a meeting of the men it was agreed to co-operate with the seamen, with a view to prolong the strike, and so induce Parliamentary interference. An effort was made by the A.S.N. Company to obtain 200 men at Adelaide. Good wages were offered, but the men de- j dined to have anything to do with the dispute, and not a single person shipped. A j disturbance has arisen at 1 Brisbane amongst j the Chinese, The com |‘any declined to pay them overtime, and they consequently struck work.”
