CURIOUS PHASE OF INSANITY.
A singular phase of insanity, that of a monomania for commerce, has developed itself in the case of Mr Orville D. Grant, brother of ex-President Grant, who has just been removed to an asylum at Morris Plains. Mr Grant appears to have been a kind husband and father, but to have had a sort of monomania for commercial transactions without any capital, while his mind was so unsteady that he could not be trusted on long journeys alone. Accordingto the ‘New York Times ’ he went to California, last of all, to attend to what he called large milling interests of his, and to push the fortunes of an invention for cleaning wheat, from which he expected great things. He returned in June, and since then his mania has been worse than ever. Of course he did not bring back the anticipated fortune. On the contrary, he has Spent or invested in unremunerative enterprises nearly or quite all the 50,000 dols. he had' formerly made in the timber business. About three weeks ago he went to Boston and entered into contracts for pianos and other manufactured articles to the extent of more than 100,000 dols. His friends went on to Boston, cancelled the contracts, paid his hotel bill, and brought him home. Dr Morton, his physician, ventures no opinion as to his ultimate recovery.
