AUCKLAND RACES. * Auckland, December 26.—Tiie summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club commenced to-day. The following is the result of the • Auckland Cup Handicap, of 300 sovs, with sweepstakes of 15 sovs. each added ; distance 2$ miles. ' Ariel, Bst 131 b 1 Gillie Galium, 6st 21b 2 The Don, 6st .. '.. ..3 Betting: 6to 1 against Ariel, to 1 Punga, Elsa, and Gillie Callum, 4 to 1 Lady Elizabeth, 5 to 1 Don. The horses got away to a splendid start. Passing the stand they ran in a heap. Pungawerewere was the first to lead off, followed by Lady Elizabeth, Ariel third. In this order they passed the stand the second time, but at theoutsidc cutting Ariel took the lead from Punga. Lady Elizabeth was second, but bolted, losing her. chance. Howe brought Gillie Callum forward in splendid style. Matthews, however, rattled along on Ariel, keeping the lead past the winning post by two lengths, Gillie Callum a good length ahead of Don ; Punga, Lady Elizabeth, and Elsa following .home in the order named.
