TOWN COUNCIL.

An emergency meeting of the-Town {founoil was held on Monday afternoon. Present: The Mayor, Crs< Horr, Young, and Locke; The minutes of former' meeting: were read and confirmed. E. R. In any case the present system is purely local in itS'ctaracter.- G. S. Cooper. - He did I not see- why the- Council should embroih itself with’ the Hospital: Com--mittfee y neither did; he nor the Council wish io do so.- The-suggestion that the Town Council and Count}' Council should' take over the management of the Hospital emanated from-the Government;, and-the proposal at one time had the suppoit of the Hospital Committee. He supportedthe proposal, because it would have been the means of securing.to the local hospital the benefit of the amount deducted from subsidy; but as the Government now subsidised any sum voted to the Hospital: by the Council,, there could be no objection against the management being, com tinned as at present.. He made these remarks as he wished the action- of the Council to be put in a proper light.. In answer to Gr Locke the Mayor said Hie amount deducted from subsidy by Government last year was £7O. THE PEOPOSED ■ LOAN. The Clerk-said he hadbeeu notified by the Manager- of the National Bank that £SOO had been deposited by a client for the purchase of corporation debentures at 90. This being the Only tender, which; was considered too high, on the motion of Gr Young, seconded by Gr Locke, it was resolved to extend Ifae time for receiving, tenders till 27-th January.FOOTPATHS IN NOHTH WAIIDiA petition was presented from ratepayers in North Ward praying that the footpaths be continued in Palmerston and Havelock streets to their- junction; with Lucknow street. —Resolved that consideration of petition be deferred till next meeting; BATHS. Cr Young laid upon the table plan-and specification for proposed baths. The site recommended’ by the Committee is situate below Mr Berndtson’s residence. —Resolved that tenders be called for erection of Baths. accounts; The following accounts wore passed’for payment:.—J.
