TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the- Tswn Ctmncil wa& held at tHa- Council Chambers on Tuesday evening last. Present r. Councillors. M'Donald (im the chair), Murchie, Acheson, Small, and Port. The minutes of the previous meeting and off a special meeting were read and confirmed. A progress payment of K per cent., on the? metalling contract at South, Hirer ton quarry was agreed to. It was resolved—That Hugh- Toner be appointed Inspector of Nuisances at a salary of £S per annum, and that the Council agree-to recommend him to the Superintendent for the office? of poundkeeper, and that ho shall receive as remuneration half the fines and poundage- fees. It was resolved, on the motion of CouncillorMurchie—That His Worship the Mayor communicate with the Secretary for Works (MrGreen) re the Dowling street bridge, and urge? upon the Government the- immediate- want of' the same.

It was moved by Councillor Murcbie, seconded by Councillor Port, and carried —That the Clerk be instructed to write to Mr Judge,; Miakarewa,. and Mr Lambert, Dunedin, to ascertain at what, price 4in. to 12in. earthenware drain pipes could be obtained.

On the motion of Councillor Murchie, seconded by Councillor Acheson, it was agreed that the* Auditors be instructed to mate a special audit o£ the Corporation boots up to the 31st August. Owing to Councillor M'Donald being in thechair, the motion of which he gave notice at. last meeting, proposing to increase the number* of wards within the municipality, waa held overtill next meeting. The Council then adjourned.
