The Western Star. (PUBLISHED WEEKLY.) SATURDAY, JULY 1, 1876.
The Southland Times of the 27th of June discourses upon the County Boundary question, and recommends that Southland be declared into one county, which would result in Invercargill domination. We do not think the Western District will be persuaded to view the matter in the same light, or consent to occupy the position of a dependent riding while its population and extent entitle it to be formed into a county by itself. We do not stand so well as we ought in supporting our rights on account of the peculiarity of the miners in their choice of a representative whose residence, interests, and proclivities being of Invercargill, are Invercargilly ; and Dr Hodgkinson, the member for Riverton, might incline towards the wishes of Winton, whoso block vote returned him for a district that largely differs from him in opinion. In the face of these adverse circumstances, it behoves us to protest by every means in our power against any one-sided or selfish scheme that Invercargill may attempt to put in force.
