A Melbourne paper -reports ' that, recently a. gentleman on the metropolitan goldfield, just stout enough to make stooping inconvenient, while paying fo>' some refreshment for his. friends in a dark hotel parlour, dropped a. coin, which-was heard to roll under the sofa* • “ Thera goes my half-sovereign—down a crack, I’ll be bound.” Of course his friends lit matches, and good-naturedly went upon, unaccustomed knees, in search-of the truant disc. At last one of them picked the thing up, remarking that it was only a sixpence after all. “ I knew that,”' said the owner, calmly, “ but if I had told you.so at first you wouldn’t have taken the trouble, to- find it for me.” The Intelligent Yagrant” writes to-the New Zealand Mail as follows jr—That word v caucus” has recently been.brought, into such prominence that it lias become quite fashionable to apply it all sorts of meetings.
