Poetry

MONODY. It was a mellow, autumn morn ; The dew was shining on. the thorn, And waving was the yellow corn, V When first I met my Mary. Lik“ wind-harps toned the leafy trees, Swept by the fitful, passing breeze ; Morn’s wackeneJ voices blent tae please The listening ear o’ Mary. And dear tae me yon leafy bush, And sweet the fretful buruie’s- gush, .Whaur first I caught the Hush, _ Steal ower the cheeks o’ Mary. ~ Nae visioned seraph soul was she,. As vagrant dreamers only see ; An eydent lass o' puir degree. Such was my darling Mary.. And tempered/weel wi’ heavenly grace,. That ever ffeeued her honest face ; Nae rankling envy had a place Within the breast o’ Mary. . But wasting sickness, fell an’ do are. Cam’ creeping pwer my bonnie flower ; An’ death, that lords a’ earthly power*. Did nip awa, my Mary. Yon " grassy known, be green for aye, Whaur blinks the gowden e’e o’ day There sing, ye win’s, your sweetest layBeneath it sleeps my Mary. W. Mackie.
