Express arrived at the jetty on Tuesday, about 3 p.m., with a large cargo of merchandise and several passengers. She left Port Chalmers on Saturday' afternoon, about 4.30, and experienced a strong head wind during her passage to the Bluff, where she did not arrive till half-past 2 p.m. next day. Left again for Riverton at 6.30 p.m. on Monday, and arrived off the port about 10 o’clock same night, when, through one of the beacon lights on *thb'north side going out, she took the gromid in endeavouring to make the outer Channel, and had to remain outside till next tide,when she arrived as above. ShesAilfect again for Dtmedin early on Wednesday morning, with a full cargo of wool and grain and a number of passengers. The schooner James Paxton sailed for the Bluff on Thursday morning. ■ There has’ been another terrible disaster at sea. The cable steamer La Plata, from Gravesend, for Rio Grande de Sul, with 250 miles of telegraph cable and apparatus for picking up arid Splicing the cable lost by the Gomez, has foundered off tJshant in a heavy gale. Fifteen of the crew were picked up by the Gareloch emigrant ship. Sixty persons are supposed to have perished with the ship, among them being the captain, doctor, and the whole of the scientific staff.
