At the election for the borough of Northampton* in the room of the late- Mr Charles Gilpin, Mr Charles Geor.e Merewether, Conservative, an unsuccessful candidate at'the general election, was returned. Serious riots occurred at the poll, occasioned by the supporters of Mr C, Bradlaugh, who was defeated,. 10th Oct. eThe monetary position ia improved. The Hungarian loan has been trebly subscribed. Wheat is still falling, and foreign arrivals are abundant. Berlin, 7th Oct, Prince Bismarck, the Chancellor of the German Empire, has submitted a bill to the Bundearat , or Federal Council, placing the Lansturra at the disposal of the Emperor in the time of war. M. do Quaadc, the .Danish ambassador at Berlin, has been instructed to make representations concerning the expulsion of Danes from Schleswig. Bth Oct. Count Arniru, who was arrested at the instance of Prince Bismarck for detaining state documents, is kept closely confined,.and an application made for his release has been refused. The missing documents belong to the archives of the Embassy in Paris. Count Arnim denies all knowledge of the greater part of them, and claims the others as his privateproperty. The affair hts caused considerable excitement in official circles in Berlin.-. ,
Madrid, Bth Oct. The report as to Don Carlos having been wounded is officially contradicted. Serious dissensions exist amongst the Carlists. (general Dorregarry has been dismissed from the command, and General Mencliree succeeds him. ’ Hoffp' Kong, 10th Oct.
It is rumoured, that war has broken out between China and Japan, over the Formosa dispute. Paris, 13th Oct.
The Spanish ambassador to France has presented a note to the Due Decazea, strongly protesting against ~ aid beihg given tor the Carlists. New York,l3th Oet.
