THE WESTERN STAR. (PUBLISHED WEEKLY.) SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 1874.

The postal authorities down South are decidedly slow. In fact they ,seem ,to be sound asleep. Some time ago there was an agitation for a direct mail from Riverton to Flint’s Bush, also for a mail to the Limestone Plains. Irrefutable arguments in favour of these services were duced, but immediately the matter got inside the somnolent precincts of tho Post-office it was lost sight of completely. But it is not of these matters we wisli to speak at present. We wish to find out how it is that the people of Riverton eau never obtain from the Post-office information as to when Australian or English mails leave until it is too late to bo of any service. It certainly does seem strange that such should bo the case. The only probable reason is that the heads of the department wish to prevent the people of the Western District from enjoying any postal privileges whatever. In Invercargill there is a notice posted up every day, affording all the information at the disposal of the Postmastcrregardingthedeparturc and arrival of mails. Why cannot a similar course be adopted in Riverton ? Surely our correspondence is as important as that of the residents of other localities. We have mildly touched on this matter at present, but if necessary shall go more fully into tho matter at an early date.
